Harrison’s interpretation of the cosmological redshift revisited

چکیده
Harrison’s argument against the interpretation of the cosmological redshift as a Doppler effect is revisited, exaggerated, and discussed. The context, purpose, and limitations of the interpretations of this phenomenon are clarified.

Clustering statistics on a light-cone in the cosmological redshift space
We summarize a series of our recent work concerning the cosmological redshift-space distortion and light-cone effects. After briefly describing the theoretical formalism, we show how those effects are sensitive to the cosmological parameters. Then we apply this formalism to predict the two-point correlation functions and power spectra for the X-ray clusters, galaxies and quasars in future surve...
متن کاملBertrand’s Paradox Revisited: More Lessons about that Ambiguous Word, Random
The Bertrand paradox question is: “Consider a unit-radius circle for which the length of a side of an inscribed equilateral triangle equals 3 . Determine the probability that the length of a ‘random’ chord of a unit-radius circle has length greater than 3 .” Bertrand derived three different ‘correct’ answers, the correctness depending on interpretation of the word, random. Here we employ geomet...

I discuss the classical cosmological tests– angular size-redshift, flux-redshift, and galaxy number counts– in the light of the cosmology prescribed by the interpretation of the CMB anisotropies. The discussion is somewhat of a primer for physicists, with emphasis upon the possible systematic uncertainties in the observations and their interpretation. Given the curious composition of the Univer...
متن کاملA New Redshift Interpretation
A nonhomogeneous universe with vacuum energy, but without spacetime expansion, is utilized together with gravitational and Doppler redshifts as the basis for proposing a new interpretation of the Hubble relation and the 2.7K Cosmic Blackbody Radiation. Hans-Dieter Radecke recently noted that modern cosmology’s dependence on “interpretations of interpretations of observations” means that “We sho...
متن کاملA physical interpretation of Hubble’s law and the cosmological redshift from the perspective of a static observer
We derive explicit and exact expressions for the physical velocity of a free particle comoving with the Hubble flow as measured by a static observer, and for the frequency shift of light emitted by a comoving source and received, again, by a static observer. The expressions make it clear that an interpretation of the redshift as a kind of Doppler effect only makes sense when the distance betwee...
